Fundo Reyna de la Selva
We bought fundo reyna de la selva in November 2007 from Luis Dias aka Hermano. He was experiencing severe financial difficulties and finding it hard to make his small holding a viable venture. We paid him a lump sum for the land and worked out a monthly care taking plan so he could continue to live there and develop his vision on the land. The 'farm' is a 200 acre plot of primary rainforest. Luis had developed some of the land to for dwellings, out buildings, a kitchen and for crop and animal cultivation in total around 10% has been cleared. Being in alto amazons (high amazon - 500m above sea level) some areas have been affected over the years with the annual dry season forest fires and droughts.
Part of our agroforestry program is converting these areas into managed and productive forests. To that effect we have been planting hard woods, medicinal trees and plants and high value fruit and super food crops such as cacao and noni.
Luis had accomplished a wealth of planting before our involvement so we are already enjoying the benefits of his hard work. Many trees that he planted are already bearing fruit; avocado, bread fruit, pineapple, cashew, sacha inchi, lemon.
We also use the land as a test bed to try new techniques in agro forestry or testing the viability of certain plant and trees.
Our aim is to support luis in to making fund reyna de la selva to be self sufficient, selling and trading the ago forestry products and the medicinal plants and fruit. Our monthly payment allow Luis to dedicate his time to developing our tree nursery, maintaing the agroforest and care taking the virgin rainforest. We also have a work exchange program in effect so visitors who wish to stay for extended periods can leered techniques in traditional land management as well as Permaculture and ago forestry techniques. |
